“The 7th DAA/Monterey County Fair Board of Directors is proud to dedicate the 2018 Junior Livestock Auction to the Shake family,” said Courtney Boyles, president of the fair board. “The Shake family has been supporting our 4-H and FFA livestock exhibitors for over 40 years.”

The BBQ will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Payton Stage lawn, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, 2004 Fairground Road in Monterey. Enter through Gate 5 on Fairground Road and head to the right.

Tickets for the BBQ are $30 general and $10 for children 12 and under, available at www.montereycountyfair.com or in person at the Fair Administration office.

Sabu Shake Sr. was a well-known restaurateur and philanthropist with restaurants on Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey. He was well known for his compassion and generosity to those in need and would never let anyone go hungry. He enjoyed feeding people and gave them food or work to get them “back on their feet,” offering them opportunities, but most of all, offering them hope.

A year after his death in 1998, his sons Chris and Sabu Jr. started the Sabu Shake Memorial Fundraiser to carry on their father’s legacy. Other benefit events soon followed, including “Sabu’s Safari,” a Christmas toy drive, and a Thanksgiving turkey drive. To date, the Sabu Shake Sr. Charitable Foundation, in addition to thousands of toys and turkeys, has raised more than $3.5 million for the benefit of The Salvation Army Monterey Corps.

The Shake family have been longtime supporters of the Junior Livestock Auction, 4-H and FFA livestock exhibitors at the fair.

The Fair will be held Aug. 30-Sept. 3, 2018, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, 2004 Fairground Road in Monterey. The Fair’s theme this year is “Shake Your Tail Feathers.”
